Family of Student Killed in Minibus Accident Disputes Driver’s Account

Guyana Times Reports. The family of 17-year-old Yujraj Ram, a student from Anna Regina Multilateral School, is calling for a thorough police investigation following his tragic death after being hit by a minibus. They believe there are inconsistencies in the driver’s account and claim eyewitnesses have provided differing reports.

The fatal accident occurred earlier this week along the Dartmouth Public Road in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam). Yujraj’s uncle, Danraj Ram, stated that during a visit to the scene, the driver indicated a specific spot where he claimed the impact occurred. However, Danraj pointed out that there was no visible evidence at that location to support the driver’s version.

Key Points from the Family:

Discrepancies in Location: Danraj noted that 15 to 20 feet away from the driver’s identified spot were broken pieces of the minibus’s light and other parts, suggesting a different point of impact.

Father’s Concerns: Doodnauth Ram, Yujraj’s father, questioned the driver’s account, stating that if Yujraj had been struck in the middle of the road, evidence would reflect that. Instead, all broken parts were found in the grass at the road’s edge.

Eyewitness Testimony: An eyewitness reported that Yujraj was standing on the opposite side of the road when he ran across to stop the approaching minibus. The witness emphasized that Yujraj did not emerge from behind another bus, contradicting the driver’s claim.

Medical Response Issues:

Following the accident, Yujraj was rushed to Charity Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. His family expressed concern over the medical response, noting that there was no ambulance driver on duty and the hospital’s x-ray machine was not functioning.

Delayed Police Action:

The family reported frustration over the police response, stating they waited over an hour and a half at the station before receiving assistance. They were informed that a site visit would occur the following day, but after multiple calls, it wasn’t until a third party intervened that the police arranged to visit the accident scene.

Family’s Call for Justice:

The Ram family is demanding a full and transparent investigation, stating, “We just want a thorough investigation and justice… Too many things are not adding up.” The police investigation is currently ongoing.
