Four men are in police custody following an armed robbery at a business operated by two Chinese nationals at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, with the subsequent operation leading to the seizure of suspected firearms, ammunition, knives and motorcycles.
According to Police Headquarters, the incident occurred as the two Chinese nationals were closing their business when four men arrived on two motorcycles from an eastern direction. Two of the men — the pillion riders — dismounted and entered the premises, one armed with a suspected firearm and the other with a knife. One victim was pushed to the ground and relieved of a cellphone and a suitcase containing clothing, while the other was held at knifepoint and robbed of cash, along with money from the business register. The suspects fled southward onto the railway embankment.
Police patrols responded and gave chase but the suspects escaped into Regional Division 4 ‘A’. During the pursuit, a cellphone belonging to one of the victims was dropped by the fleeing men and later recovered by a Community Policing Group member, who handed it over to police.
Acting on intelligence and in coordination with the Guyana Police Force Command Center, ranks conducted an operation at Robb Street, Georgetown, where a 21-year-old security guard, a 22-year-old construction worker and a 25-year-old mason of Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, were arrested. A search of the premises uncovered two suspected 9mm pistols with eighteen matching rounds of ammunition, one toy gun, three knives, two XR motorcycles and cash found on one of the suspects.
Following further information received, officers went to the home of a 19-year-old construction worker, where he was arrested and a quantity of cash and two cellular phones were recovered.
All four suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. CCTV footage from the business establishment is also being reviewed as part of the ongoing probe.
