This update was provided by Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud during the Committee of Supply’s examination of the ministry’s 2026 budget estimates. Concerns were raised by opposition MPs regarding the rising costs associated with maintaining aging care facilities.

During the discussion, opposition MP Vishnu Panday suggested that given the significant spending on repairs at the Palms Geriatric Home, which is now 150 years old, it may be more practical for the government to construct a new facility equipped with modern amenities to better meet residents’ needs.

In response, Minister Persaud confirmed that the government is already progressing with the plan. She noted that land has been identified for the new facility, and design work has been completed. Preparations for the bill of quantities (BoQ) to guide construction are also ongoing.

The minister stated that the new senior citizens home is expected to be completed next year, pending the finalization of remaining preparatory work. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to providing innovative care solutions for the elderly, including community-based and home-based support systems.

Minister Persaud emphasized that the move reflects the government’s broader strategy to expand social services, ensuring that senior citizens receive care in facilities that meet modern standards.

Discussions in the Committee of Supply also highlighted the ministry’s response to vulnerable populations, including those displaced by fires or other emergencies, and individuals living on the streets. Minister Persaud indicated that further details would depend on specific line items within the budget estimates.
