Government Cracks Down on Illegal Mining, 44 Arrested

News

In a decisive move against illegal mining practices, the Government of Guyana has announced the arrest and charging of 44 individuals in connection with unlawful mining activities across the country. The Ministry of Natural Resources detailed these developments in a press statement issued on January 22, 2026, highlighting the seizure of over 50 pieces of mining equipment and related materials from unlicensed operations.

The arrested individuals were identified in various mining districts, including Bartica and surrounding areas in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), as well as Mahdia and its environs in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni). Following their arrests, these offenders have been convicted and fined according to the law. The ministry reported that several other cases are currently under investigation, with expectations of additional charges as the legal process unfolds.

This crackdown is part of a robust national enforcement strategy initiated in response to President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s call to dismantle illegal mining operations and ensure full compliance with Guyana’s mining laws and regulations.

Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, emphasized the government’s unwavering resolve to uphold mining legislation. “Illegal mining poses serious risks to the environment, public safety, and the integrity of the sector and will not be tolerated,” he stated, underscoring that those who operate outside the law will face prosecution.

The Ministry of Natural Resources reiterated its commitment to continuing enforcement operations nationwide, utilizing ongoing monitoring, inspections, and close collaboration with regulatory and law enforcement agencies to eliminate illegal activities. The ministry is dedicated to safeguarding Guyana’s natural resources and ensuring lawful, responsible mining practices that serve the national interest.
