Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has announced that the Government is actively considering new legislation that will adjust the rights and privileges of migrants in Guyana. This move follows recent security concerns, particularly after a deadly bombing at the Mobil Regent Street gas station, which has led to terrorism charges against Venezuelan and Guyanese nationals.
During a press conference, Jagdeo emphasized the need for new measures regarding migration. “Further, we have to pass laws that will determine what rights people are going to have here if they are migrants,” he stated. While acknowledging the necessity for migrant labor, he made it clear that the government intends to preserve the nation’s identity. “We want people to come and work because we need that, but they can’t change the nature of our society,” he added.
Jagdeo indicated that migrants might be allowed residency without voting rights, highlighting that a comprehensive migrant policy is in development. A significant component of this policy will be the planned Electronic-ID program, which will require every person in the country to register.
He explained that the E-ID will enable the government to monitor the population effectively. “Every person in Guyana will have a card with biometrics, facial recognition, and everything on it,” Jagdeo noted. He warned that without this card, individuals would find it challenging to survive in the country, as employers would face serious penalties for hiring workers without it. The card will also be necessary for opening bank accounts and remitting money abroad.
The Vice President mentioned that consultations will be held to determine the rights that the government is willing to extend to migrants, emphasizing the importance of preserving the country for its citizens. He pointed out that similar measures have been successfully implemented in countries like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Jagdeo described the issue of migration as crucial for the safety and security of the nation, underscoring the government’s commitment to addressing it responsibly.
