Dr. Anthony warned that many individuals with diabetes have progressed to kidney failure, leading the Ministry of Health to introduce new medications aimed at delaying renal complications. “One of the interventions that we’re introducing this year is a set of new medications that can help delay the onset of kidney failure for some of these patients,” he stated.

In an effort to combat these issues, the ministry is actively seeking to deepen partnerships with private healthcare providers to expand screening initiatives and implement preventive measures against chronic illnesses reaching life-threatening stages.

Furthermore, Dr. Anthony mentioned that the ministry is considering expanding laboratory vouchers to include ultrasound services, contingent upon consultations to establish standardized pricing. “We’re not against it. We just want to ensure that we can negotiate a standardized price for it, and then we would have the voucher,” he added.

To enhance access to health screenings, the ministry plans to collaborate with faith-based organizations, workplaces, and private sector entities. They will encourage these groups to host outreach activities, promoting screening days for congregations and employees. “If you have any innovative way of reaching out to people, then let’s do that,” the minister urged private providers.

The ministry’s proactive approach aims to increase awareness and reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases, ultimately improving public health outcomes in the nation.
