Hon. Annette N. Ferguson, Member of Parliament, has expressed her deep sorrow and concern over the recent tragic killing of a woman by her husband, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and action against domestic violence in Guyana.

In a statement shared on social media, Ferguson described the incident as a “heinous killing” of a wife, mother, daughter, and sister, emphasizing the profound impact such acts of violence have on families and loved ones who are left to cope with the pain. “Domestic violence is real, and far too often it leaves deep wounds in families,” she noted.
Ferguson questioned the effectiveness of the system in protecting victims, stating that many individuals who report domestic violence to the police often receive little to no support. She referred to the repeal of the Domestic Violence Act of 2006 and its replacement with the Family Violence Act in 2024, which aimed to give police broader authority to address these issues. However, she expressed disappointment that not much progress has been made in public sensitization or awareness campaigns to combat domestic violence.
“Today, though eventful for me personally, ended with great concern after reading of this murder-suicide and also the fatal accident on the Linden Highway,” Ferguson remarked. She called upon the community to intensify their prayers, noting the couple’s ten-year-old son who is currently fighting for his life.
Ferguson extended her deepest condolences to the families affected by these tragedies, praying for comfort and strength during their times of bereavement. “It is TIME we find a National Solution to this problem that is tearing families apart,” she concluded, urging collective action to address the pressing issue of domestic violence in the country.
