The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Rowell La Cruz, originally from the village of Warapoka in the North West District. Two other miners sustained injuries: a 36-year-old man from Blygezight, East Coast Demerara, and another 25-year-old from Paramakatoi village.

According to a police report, La Cruz and a fellow miner were in the kitchen area when they were confronted by three men who accused them of stealing gold from a sluice box. The accused miners were then taken to a nearby watch camp, where another individual questioned them about the alleged theft.

Reports indicate that the suspects, armed with a handgun, cutlasses, and a mattock handle, assaulted the miners, inflicting multiple injuries. The police received notification of the attack and arrived at the scene to find the injured men. Tragically, La Cruz was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, while the other two were swiftly transported to the hospital for treatment.

Authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation into the incident to bring those responsible to justice. The mining community remains on alert as police continue their inquiries.
