
TV journalist Jim Avila, a former senior news correspondent for ABC News, has passed away at 69 after a “long illness.” His death was announced by “ABC News Live” anchor Diane Macedo on November 13.
Avila, who also contributed to “20/20,” specialized in politics, justice, law, and consumer investigations. Notably, he broke the news of the U.S. and Cuba reopening diplomatic relations, earning the prestigious Merriman Award from the White House Correspondents Association.
He had previously faced health challenges, including a kidney transplant, and later worked as a senior investigative reporter for ABC’s San Diego affiliate. Additional details about his illness were not disclosed.
