Jury Convicts Man of Raping Five-Year-Old Boy

I News Guyana Reports | A 12-member jury delivered a guilty verdict on Monday against 29-year-old Sanjay Peters from Corentyne for the rape of a five-year-old boy, an offense committed approximately seven years ago.

Peters, who had been released into his mother’s custody during the trial, was remanded to prison following the jury’s decision. He is scheduled to return to court on January 6, 2025, where Justice Sandil Kissoon is expected to impose his sentence.

The jury found Peters guilty on both counts of the indictment, which stated that between July 1 and August 5, 2018, he raped a child known to be a family member, fully aware that the boy was under 15 years old.

The prosecution, led by State Counsel Cicela Corbin, presented a compelling case with seven witnesses testifying against Peters. Attorney-at-Law Kevin Morgan represented the defendant throughout the proceedings.

Shortly after the verdict was announced, the victim’s mother expressed her relief at the outcome, stating, “I have waited eight years for this; I finally get justice.” She described the lengthy journey from the initial complaint to conviction as emotionally draining but emphasized that she never lost hope.

Justice Kissoon ordered Peters to be remanded immediately and scheduled the next court appearance for early January at the Berbice High Court, where he will face sentencing.
