NCN Reports: A 52-year-old labourer died on Sunday morning at the Georgetown Public Hospital after being struck by a vehicle the previous evening along the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Matthew Vanveen, of Lot 51 Castello Housing Scheme, East La Penitence, Georgetown, was involved in the accident on Saturday evening in the vicinity of the Guyoil Gas Station on the Providence Public Road.
According to reports, Vanveen was crossing the road from west to east while carrying a five-gallon container of fuel. As he attempted to step off the concrete median, he reportedly lost his footing and stumbled backwards into the path of an oncoming vehicle, which struck him.
He was picked up in a semi-conscious condition by the driver and members of the public and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he died while receiving medical treatment. His body has since been transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The driver of the vehicle involved is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
