A 44-year-old labourer from Lima, Essequibo Coast, has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison after pleading guilty to unlawfully wounding his wife during a domestic altercation.

Khempersaud Sukhan appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where the charge of unlawful wounding was formally presented under Section 50 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. The incident occurred on Sunday at the couple’s residence in Lima. The victim is a 28-year-old part-time worker.
Initially, Sukhan was not required to enter a plea. However, after the prosecutor requested that the matter proceed under the Administration of Justice Act (AJA), the charge was reread, and he subsequently entered a guilty plea.
After considering the circumstances of the case, Magistrate Clarke imposed a custodial sentence of three years and four months.
