Alongside the firearm seizures, 11 individuals have been charged with firearm-related offences. Under Guyana’s laws, possessing an illegal firearm can result in imprisonment for one to three years, along with potential fines ranging from $3,000 to $15,000.

In a recent press release, the Guyana Police Force reported that since 2020, field operations have led to the confiscation of over 790 illegal firearms, demonstrating a steady increase in annual seizures, from 133 in 2020 to a peak of 178 in 2024. During this time, more than 290 individuals have been charged with firearm-related offences, illustrating the link between law enforcement actions and ongoing criminal investigations.

Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken emphasized the Force’s focus on reducing criminal activity, removing illegal weapons and drugs from the streets, and ensuring citizen safety through professional and disciplined policing. He affirmed that the Guyana Police Force will continue to build on its operational successes, modernize policing methods, and actively engage communities to minimize the circulation of illegal firearms and enhance public safety.
