Deodat Bissoon, 50, proprietor of Singh’s Grocery Store and Bar at Lot 433 Train Line, Port Mourant, recounted the harrowing ordeal that unfolded at approximately 9:00 p.m. on March 27, 2026, when he was entertaining around 15 regular customers at his establishment, which also houses a Super Bet gaming outlet.

“Was Friday night, the 27th March, at nine o’clock, I saw some armed bandits run in the shop and they said, ‘everybody get down, get down!’ Everyone did get down. Them come and scramble my bangle and my finger ring, and the wallet,” Bissoon told this publication.

The four males, who arrived in a silver Toyota Fielder Wagon and were brandishing guns and knives, did not limit their assault to the proprietor. They aggressively moved through the establishment, searching every patron present and seizing cash, wallets containing documents, cellular phones, car keys, bicycles, and other personal items. Several customers were slapped and kicked in the process, as was Bissoon himself.

After finishing with the customers, the gunmen turned their attention to the shop, where Bissoon’s wife, Amrita Singh, 38, was behind the counter. She was held at gunpoint while the men seized her jewellery and cash. The ordeal did not end there — the bandits then forced her into the family’s adjoining home, kicking down the door and ransacking the residence in search of additional valuables. The entire incident lasted more than half an hour.

Bissoon said in his 13 years of operating the business, nothing of this nature had ever occurred, adding that he initially thought it was a prank when the men entered.

Singh described the experience as deeply traumatising, saying she chose to comply rather than risk escalation.

“This is the first time we ever faced something like this, and it was very, very scary. I was scared that if he fight back, they could’ve shot him or me, and things could’ve escalated worst, so we just try our best not to do anything, just stand up at the side and cooperate with them,” she said.

The family suspects the robbery may have been carried out by persons familiar with them, given the targeted nature of the raid. A report was lodged at the Whim Police Station shortly after the men fled, and a follow-up was made the next day. This publication confirmed with police in Region Six that two men were subsequently taken into custody and later released on $100,000 bail each.

Bissoon is now appealing to Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond to expedite the processing of his firearm licence application, which he said has already been submitted.

“I’d like if the Home Affairs minister can give the business people firearm to protect ourselves and our family,” he pleaded.
