Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., announced on Sunday that four stadiums are set to open in 2025, with a fifth to be commissioned in 2026. This initiative is part of the Irfaan Ali-led PPP/C government’s comprehensive vision for rapid development in Guyana.

During his address, Minister Ramson Jr. emphasized the significance of these projects, stating, “The government decided to build and/or complete five stadiums, a record for any country in the region.” He noted that two of these stadiums were previously abandoned track and field projects inherited from the prior APNU-AFC administration.
All five stadiums are reportedly being completed within budget, with costs lower than the G$1.6 billion allocated for the Durban Park project. “The APNU-AFC government misled the public year after year about the completion of the tracks, despite not even purchasing the synthetic material needed. It was the current government that procured this material at a cost of over one million Euros,” Ramson Jr. explained.
The Minister confirmed that both previously failed facilities, along with two multi-purpose stadiums, are on schedule for completion this year. The Palmyra International Stadium is expected to open next year. “This is a record for any Caribbean country, especially when compared to the APNU+AFC’s Durban Park project, where G$600 million remains unaccounted for,” he added.
President Ali has consistently articulated the government’s goal of making Guyana a hub for major international sports and entertainment events. At the recent opening of the Jewelz by King’s Hotel in Georgetown, he announced plans for a world-class indoor facility capable of accommodating 15,000 people. This facility aims to position Guyana for hosting significant events, including Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), international boxing, NBA playoff games, and major concerts.
As the government moves forward with these ambitious projects, the vision for a thriving sports and entertainment culture in Guyana continues to take shape.
