Ministry of Home Affairs Welcomes US Sanctions Against Drug Traffickers

The Ministry of Home Affairs applauds the significant actions taken today (Thursday, June 5, 2025) by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which has sanctioned several named Guyanese and foreign nationals as part of ongoing investigations into the use of Guyana as a transshipment point for drugs destined for the United States.

Among those sanctioned is Guyana Police Force Senior Superintendent Himnauth Sawh, identified for his involvement in drug trafficking. In response to this development, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has placed Senior Superintendent Sawh on administrative leave with immediate effect to facilitate further investigations. Additional actions will follow.

The Government of Guyana, through the Attorney General’s Office, will request further details from OFAC via the US Department of Justice to support ongoing investigations. These details will inform the PSC’s actions and the government’s subsequent steps.

The Government of Guyana remains committed to eradicating drug trafficking and dismantling criminal networks that facilitate these illegal activities. Through robust enforcement strategies and enhanced monitoring measures, authorities will continue to pursue and prosecute offenders, emphasizing the government’s dedication to preserving national security.

Furthermore, with the support of the United States, Guyana will enhance collaborative efforts to combat this threat. This commitment is underscored by the successful collaboration between the US and Guyana’s Joint Inter-Agency Task Force, which resulted in the seizure of 4.4 metric tonnes of cocaine worth approximately USD 195 million in September 2024—the largest drug seizure in the nation’s history.

The Government of Guyana will continue to work diligently with US counterparts on this matter and other areas of mutual interest.
