Ministry Responds to Claims of Property Damage Linked to New Bridge

The Ministry of Public Works has issued a statement in response to a report from Stabroek News regarding alleged property damage at a residence in Peter’s Hall, attributed to vibrations from the newly constructed Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.

According to the Ministry, an official report regarding the damage was submitted via their WhatsApp Hotline on November 21, 2025. This report was promptly forwarded for further investigation. On November 24, an engineer from the Ministry communicated with Ms. Roshan, the homeowner, to arrange for an inspection by contractor representatives.

A joint assessment was conducted at Ms. Roshan’s residence on November 25. During this visit, she clarified that the damage had occurred over the past two years, during the construction phase of the bridge, and not since its completion. Ms. Roshan noted that she had not previously reported the issue to project staff, as she intended to address the repairs after the bridge’s completion. However, escalating repair costs prompted her to seek compensation through social media.

The Ministry points out that there was an opportunity for residents to report grievances during the project’s redress period. Consultations and informational flyers were distributed, allowing residents to voice any concerns.

In light of this, the Ministry refutes the claim that the damages were caused by vibrations from the new bridge, which officially opened to vehicular traffic on October 5, 2025. Nevertheless, an inspection was carried out to document the damages, and the findings, including photographs, will be reviewed.
