New Measures to Enhance Maritime Safety in Guyana

News

Random testing of boat operators for alcohol and drug use will soon be implemented in Guyana as part of new measures to strengthen safety and accountability in the maritime transport sector.

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill announced this initiative following a meeting with senior officials from the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) to address ongoing issues related to vessel maintenance, safety inspections, and crew living conditions. Minister Madanlall Ramraj also attended the meeting.

Minister Edghill emphasized a “strict no-tolerance policy for mismanagement” of vessels and pledged to ensure compliance with maintenance and safety standards.

Additional measures include mandatory vessel inspections, routine engine servicing supported by a new checklist, and tighter regulations for operators.

These steps are part of a broader effort to improve safety standards and modernize the transport sector in Guyana.
