For Operating a Package Delivery Romance Scheme in Guyana
Following an intense investigation conducted by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU), it was revealed that in 2022, Matthew Ejike Nwachukwu facilitated several fraudulent romance schemes and package delivery scams, defrauding dozens of Guyanese of millions of dollars.

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Magistrate Liverpool of Linden Magistrate Court found Nwachukwu guilty on two counts of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, contrary to Section 33 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8.01, and sentenced him to three years imprisonment on each count.
In September 2022, Nwachukwu was charged and remanded on both charges. One complainant recounted that she was befriended by a German man (the mastermind) and developed a long-distance relationship with him. In July 2022, her German partner indicated that he would send packages containing valuables via FedEx.
Three days later, she received a call from a foreign number stating that the packages had arrived in Guyana and that she needed to pay GD$155,000 (one hundred fifty-five thousand Guyana dollars) to various persons at the McKenzie Post Office to uplift the package. She believed the packages were genuine after being informed they contained diamonds and other valuables, and that the payment was necessary to prevent confiscation due to money laundering concerns.
During the trial, SOCU presented evidence showing that Nwachukwu was an accessory to the crime, arranging agents on behalf of the German mastermind to collect money from the complainant at the MacKenzie Post Office.
The case was prosecuted by Aaron Daniels and Neville Jeffers from SOCU, while Attorney-at-Law Lawrence Harris represented Nwachukwu. SOCU reports that efforts are underway to apprehend the German mastermind and other accomplices as investigations continue into the extensive package delivery romance schemes operated by Nigerian nationals in Guyana.
