Police Commissioner Hicken Encourages Public to Approach Him Directly with Concerns

Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken has urged members of the public to approach him directly with any issues related to the Guyana Police Force, particularly if they feel their reports are being unfairly handled. Speaking during the government-produced program “Safeguarding the Nation,” Hicken emphasized the Police Force’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

Highlighting an open-door policy, Hicken acknowledged that there are still challenges within the system where citizens feel their matters have not been adequately addressed. “No police officer is above the law, and similarly, no civilian is above the law,” he stated. He encouraged citizens to reach out to him or to divisional branch commanders, reinforcing the importance of accessible communication between the public and the police.

Hicken mentioned the existence of the Police Complaints Authority and the Office of Professional Responsibility, which handle public grievances. However, he reassured citizens that if they encounter any failures within those systems, they are welcome to bring their concerns directly to him. “I will ensure that the matter is resolved,” he affirmed.

The Commissioner called on citizens to embrace the Guyana Police Force, noting that despite its shortcomings, the Force is the first line of defense for many. “We are developing capacity based on what is offered to us through the budget and putting systems in place to create a friendly atmosphere with the public,” he explained. He emphasized that there should be no barriers to communication between the Police Force and the community.

Hicken also discussed ongoing reforms within the Police Force, including the decentralization of police services across various regions. He highlighted the Force’s commitment to combating crime, noting that serious crime rates in the country have been on the decline.

As the Police Commissioner continues to advocate for transparency and community engagement, he aims to foster a stronger relationship between the Guyana Police Force and the public it serves.
