Authorities in Regional Division #7 are currently investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on February 5, 2026, during a joint service operation at Quartzstone Backdam. The incident resulted in the death of Shemar Latif, whose age has not yet been confirmed. He was a resident of Onderneeming Sandpit, Essequibo Coast.
The operation was part of an effort to apprehend a wanted fugitive and his alleged accomplices connected to serious offenses in the area. During the operation, police encountered Latif, who is believed to be one of the accomplices. Reports indicate that when police attempted to engage him, Latif, armed with a handgun, fired several rounds at the officers while trying to flee.
In response, police took evasive action and returned fire, resulting in Latif sustaining injuries. A 9mm pistol, six live rounds of ammunition, and numerous spent shells were recovered from the scene.
Latif was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician. His body is currently at the hospital’s mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, as police continue to gather details surrounding the incident.
