President Dr. Irfaan Ali Dissolves Parliament Ahead of September Elections

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has officially dissolved Guyana’s 12th Parliament and all Regional Democratic Councils, paving the way for general and regional elections scheduled for September 1, 2025.

The announcement was made on Thursday when the Head of State signed two proclamations at State House, exercising his constitutional powers under the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.

“Free and fair elections are the lifeblood of a democratic state,” President Ali declared while addressing the nation. He emphasized that the upcoming elections signify the country’s commitment to renewing the democratic covenant between its citizens and government.

The final sitting of the 12th Parliament occurred on June 2, marking the close of a parliamentary cycle that President Ali had indicated would end when he announced the election date during Independence Day celebrations on May 26.

According to Guyana’s Constitution, the President can dissolve Parliament by proclamation at any time. Once dissolved, general elections must be held within three months, with the date formally set by the President.

In his address, President Ali encouraged every eligible voter to participate in shaping the nation’s future. “I urge all Guyanese to participate in the upcoming elections and, in so doing, be part of this critical decision-making process of the state,” he stated.

The responsibility for administering the elections lies with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), and President Ali expressed confidence in their ability to conduct free, fair, and credible polls. “I urge all Guyanese to support the work of GECOM,” he added.

With the dissolution of Parliament, Guyana enters full election mode, as political parties prepare for what promises to be a competitive campaign season.
