The Queen’s College community is in mourning following the passing of their beloved Games Master, Mr. John Anthony Barnwell, affectionately known as Sir Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell.

With heavy hearts, the institution reflects on his impactful life and enduring legacy. May his soul rest in peace, as his virtues will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Sir Johnny was a passionate advocate for sports in Guyana, emphasizing its vital role in personal development and well-being. His love for cricket was sparked in his youth by his uncle, Pelham Alleyne, and later expanded to include football and basketball. This deep-rooted passion led him to dedicate his life to coaching and sports organizations across various disciplines.
While pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering with the Guyana Defence Force, Sir Barnwell became involved in the army’s Sports Department. There, he honed his skills and traveled throughout the region with the GDF football team, earning the nickname ‘Overseas.’
Inspired by his experiences, he chose to focus his career on sports education and administration, coaching at St. George’s Secondary, The Bishop’s High, and Queen’s College. Sir Johnny firmly believed that sports should be an integral part of education and personal growth, always encouraging student participation.
His enthusiasm revitalized sports at Queen’s College, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. He implemented innovative ways to instill a love of sports in students and played a key role in nearly every sports club, assisting with equipment and gear.
Beyond athletics, he inspired students to excel academically and imparted valuable life lessons at every opportunity.
The Queen’s College community will forever hold Sir Johnny in their fondest memories. Lictor Live also extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. John Anthony Barnwell.
