President Dr. Irfaan Ali has called upon China to play a crucial role in safeguarding Guyana’s territorial integrity amidst ongoing threats from Venezuela. His appeal came during a diplomatic reception at the Chinese Embassy on Thursday, marking the 53rd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Guyana and the People’s Republic of China.

In his address, President Ali emphasized the importance of partnership in addressing key national issues, stating, “Ambassador, we have already had many discussions on ways in which we can advance our partnership—discussions surrounding every aspect of our national life, including the safeguards of our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the role China must play in ensuring this region remains peaceful.”
The appeal to China is particularly significant as Guyana faces increased pressure from Venezuela over the Essequibo region, which constitutes more than two-thirds of its landmass. Venezuela has escalated its claims through a controversial national referendum and aggressive rhetoric, despite the ongoing case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where Guyana seeks a definitive judgment.
In response to these challenges, Guyana has adopted a proactive diplomatic approach, seeking international support and leveraging bilateral partnerships to uphold its territorial rights. President Ali’s remarks signal an expectation that allies, particularly China, will support international law and contribute to regional stability.
“The international system must be free from threats and extremism, and based on policies that promote peace, democracy, and the rule of law,” President Ali asserted, highlighting the connection between Guyana’s development goals and the necessity for a secure territorial framework.
Despite these geopolitical tensions, President Ali reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with China across various sectors, including agriculture, infrastructure, education, telecommunications, and energy. He expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their longstanding support, asserting that the bilateral relationship, built on mutual trust and a shared vision for development, continues to thrive.
“We are confident that as Guyana rises to new heights, China will be there—offering friendship, partnership, and support in advancing mutual benefits and development,” he concluded.
