An unemployed man with no fixed place of abode was sentenced to a year behind bars on Friday after admitting to stealing copper cables from the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge.
Roy Morgan, 39, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate’s Court #2 on Friday, September 4, 2026.
He faced a charge of simple larceny, contrary to Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. Morgan entered a guilty plea to the charge, prompting Magistrate Bess to hand down a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment.
The charge stems from an investigation into the theft of copper cables from the bridge infrastructure, which occurred between August 23 and September 1, 2026. Morgan was apprehended by law enforcement on Wednesday, September 2, leading to the swift filing of charges and his subsequent conviction in court.
