For Shereen and Michael Sealey, graduating from the University of Guyana represents more than just individual success; it symbolizes a decade of shared resilience and determination. Both dedicated police officers, they have defied the odds and risen above their humble beginnings, proving that hard work and support can lead to great achievements.

Shereen’s story starts in Victory Valley, Wismar Linden, an area often written off as a “ghetto.” However, her upbringing, marked by resilience and the sacrifices of her hardworking mother, fueled her ambitions. “I am proud to stand today as living proof that greatness can emerge from even the humblest beginnings,” Shereen reflects, acknowledging her mother’s role in transforming challenges into opportunities.
Their paths united within the Guyana Police Force, where Shereen pursued her passion for social work, earning her Bachelor’s Degree, while Michael achieved his Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety with Distinction. Michael’s academic journey was particularly challenging due to his assignments in remote locations with unreliable internet access. However, driven by Shereen’s encouragement, he persevered and is now pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Shereen credits her mother-in-law, Ms. Bonita Hunter, as a pivotal source of inspiration. Initially hesitant about managing work and study, Shereen’s doubts were assuaged by Ms. Hunter’s unwavering belief in her potential. Her sister-in-law, Kezia Bacchus, further pushed her to apply to the university, buoying Shereen with the belief that she could succeed in her academic endeavors.
In the beginning, Shereen struggled with self-confidence in her classes, often fearing that her input would be overshadowed by more outspoken peers. Over time, she discovered the value of her own perspective, eventually earning her Associate Degree in Social Work in 2023 and immediately setting her sights on a Bachelor’s Degree.
Balancing work, family life, and university proved to be a tremendous challenge for the Sealeys. The hardest sacrifices were being away from their two children or being present but overwhelmed with schoolwork. “There were moments when I felt ready to quit,” Shereen admitted, but the ongoing encouragement from family and colleagues helped her stay the course.
This month, Shereen will graduate as the first in her family to earn a Bachelor’s Degree, fulfilling the University of Guyana’s mission of “One Graduate per Household.” As she reflects on her journey, she expresses immense pride: “My story is proof that greatness can come from anywhere. It doesn’t matter where you begin; what matters is your will to rise, persevere, and believe in yourself even when others doubt you.”
Michael, standing proudly beside Shereen, echoes her sentiments. “I know my mother and siblings are excited and proud of my accomplishments. My mom’s belief in my wife and me has never wavered.” Together, they stand as successful police officers, ready to continue serving their country, now equipped with enhanced academic credentials and a testament to their enduring partnership.
