Small Turnout at APNU Protest in Demand for Cash Grants

News

News Room Reports | The PNC-led opposition coalition, the APNU, struggled to rally significant support during its protest on Monday, which demanded that the government expedite cash grants before the year’s end. This call comes despite President Ali’s recent announcements indicating that such grants are already being distributed.

President Ali has stated that cash grants for vulnerable groups—including the elderly, persons with disabilities, children, women, small businesses, and farmers—will be rolled out before the end of the year. He emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to empower all citizens during the government’s five-year term and aims for a more organized distribution process.

Notably, the President has already confirmed that individuals with disabilities will receive a cash grant of $50,000 before the year’s conclusion.

The APNU protest took place at the Square of the Revolution, but attendance was notably low. PNC leader Aubrey Norton was absent from the demonstration; however, other senior figures and Parliamentarians, including Terrence Campbell, were present on the picket line.

The limited turnout raises questions about the coalition’s ability to mobilize support following its recent defeat in the general elections. As the government begins its grant distribution, the efficacy of the APNU’s protest efforts remains to be seen.
