Suspect Arrested for Zeelugt Murder and Home Invasion

Less than 24 hours after the tragic home invasion that claimed the life of seven-year-old Adriel Aftab Mohamed and left his great-grandmother critically injured, the Guyana Police Force has taken a suspect into custody.

Deputy Commissioner of Police and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, confirmed on Saturday that the suspect was apprehended at his residence in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara). The individual is currently being questioned by detectives as the investigation continues.

The attack occurred early Friday morning at the victims’ home in Phase 3, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme. Police reports indicate that at approximately 5:05 a.m., a relative arrived at the residence to discover the 72-year-old great-grandmother, Halima Itwari, suffering from a stab wound to the neck, and young Adriel deceased in a pool of blood with a severe wound to his throat.

A knife, believed by investigators to be the weapon used in the commission of the crime, was recovered at the scene.

Following the discovery, the elderly woman was rushed to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital. Officials have since reported that she has been admitted and is currently in stable condition.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to build a case against the suspect.
