SWAT Constable Found Guilty of Manslaughter in Shooting of Orin Boston

Police Constable Sherwin Peters has been found guilty of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Essequibo businessman Orin Boston, which occurred in September 2021. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday after a trial that featured testimony from 25 witnesses.

Peters appeared at the High Court in Essequibo before Justice Sandil Kissoon and is currently remanded to prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced on July 10, 2025. State Counsel Latifah Elliot prosecuted the case, while Peters represented himself.

The charge against Peters alleged that he unlawfully killed Boston on September 15, 2021, at Dartmouth, Essequibo. Boston was shot during an anti-crime operation conducted by the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, which was reportedly searching for prohibited items at his residence, although nothing illegal was found.

Boston’s family disputed the police’s claims that he was shot during a confrontation, asserting that he was shot while sleeping. Following the incident, local residents protested, blocking the main bridge and igniting debris in response to the shooting.

An investigation conducted by the Office of Professional Responsibility was forwarded to the Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority, Justice (ret’d) William Ramlall, on September 23, 2021. The file was later sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who recommended manslaughter charges against Peters.

As the case progresses toward sentencing, the community remains vigilant, seeking justice for Orin Boston.
