Police in Regional Division #5 have arrested two males following the discovery of a significant quantity of marijuana along the West Coast Berbice public road.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 3, 2026, around 15:45 hrs during a mobile patrol along Naarstigheid Public Road. Police officers stopped a motorcycle heading towards Georgetown, which had two males on board.
Upon conducting a search of a haversack worn by the pillion rider, officers discovered nine parcels containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The driver, a 31-year-old resident of Savannah Park, New Amsterdam, and the pillion rider, a 23-year-old from Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, were arrested at the scene.
Both suspects, along with the seized narcotics, were taken to the Fort Wellington Police Station, where the cannabis was weighed in their presence, totaling 3.70 kilograms (approximately 8.157 pounds). The suspected cannabis was subsequently lodged as evidence.
Investigations are ongoing, and both suspects remain in custody.
