Two Brazilian nationals, Jose Antonio Rodrigues Dos Santos, 58, and Isac Aguiar Abreu, 36, were arrested on September 22, 2025, and charged with purchasing gold without authorization, violating the Guyana Gold Board Act.

The men, both miners from Boa Vista, Brazil, faced charges under Section 7(2) of the Guyana Gold Board Act, which prohibits the purchase of gold from individuals not authorized by the Gold Board.
They appeared in Lethem Magistrate’s Court on September 23, where the charges were read individually. Both defendants pleaded guilty and were fined $75,000 or given the option of serving 7 months in prison.
This incident underscores the importance of compliance with local regulations governing gold transactions in Guyana.
