News

News Source Guyana Reports : A number of employees from the Accounts Department of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) are being questioned by police regarding the disappearance of approximately $5 million belonging to the Commission.

Crime Chief and Deputy Commissioner of Police Wendell Blanhum confirmed the investigation to News Source, stating that the employees are “assisting” authorities with a report of simple larceny involving the missing funds. He declined to provide further details.

GECOM officials are remaining tight-lipped about the situation, although one senior official indicated that a full internal investigation is also underway. The official noted that a public statement will be issued upon the completion of the investigation.

The probe was initiated after discrepancies were discovered concerning a significant sum of money that had passed through the Accounts Department. Investigations began over the weekend, prompting GECOM to contact police immediately.

CID officers visited GECOM offices to question several staff members and subsequently invited them to CID headquarters for further interrogation.

This discovery comes at a time when GECOM has begun processing payments for temporary workers who were employed during the recent elections. Some workers received payments last week, while others are expecting their dues this week. Hundreds of temporary workers were engaged by GECOM for various election-related duties.
