Daily, the PPP and its supporters attempt to label Hinds and the WPA as racists, but many in Guyana see through this narrative.
The WPA stands firmly for racial justice and equality, having shown solidarity with Indian Guyanese during times of pain. The party’s greatest “sin,” from the PPP’s perspective, is its resilience. Despite the PPP’s efforts to use Walter Rodney’s legacy to create division, the WPA has persisted, exposing racial discrimination against African Guyanese.
The PPP is frustrated by the WPA’s success in maintaining its integrity and influence, unable to sway its members with promises of money or political positions. Moreover, the WPA is fostering a movement of African self-pride and cultural identity, reminiscent of the cultural revolution led by ASCRIA, one of its founding groups.
This blend of politics and culture is unsettling for the PPP, which aims for ethno-political dominance while promoting the concept of “One Guyana.” The WPA’s continued presence and activism challenge this narrative, striking fear into the hearts of those who wish to maintain control.
