Fox News Reports Former NBA forward and Wake Forest basketball legend Rodney Rogers has died at the age of 54, the university confirmed on Saturday.

According to a statement shared by his wife, Faye Rogers, he passed away from natural causes related to complications from a 2008 spinal cord injury.

Rogers, who enjoyed a 12-year NBA career, was best known for earning the league’s Sixth Man of the Year award during the 1999–2000 season. Before turning professional, he became one of Wake Forest’s most celebrated athletes. Rogers was named ACC Freshman of the Year in 1991, earned first-team All-ACC honors in 1992 and 1993, and was crowned ACC Player of the Year in 1993 after leading the Demon Deacons to the Sweet 16.

“Rodney remained a light – positive, motivated, and full of quiet strength that inspired everyone around him,” Faye Rogers said. She also expressed gratitude for the support the family has received from the Wake Forest and NBA communities over the years, asking for privacy as they grieve.

Rogers’ life changed in 2008 when he suffered a spinal cord injury in a dirt bike accident. Despite being paralyzed, he maintained a public reputation for resilience and optimism — qualities that led Wake Forest to honor him with its Distinguished Alumni Award in 2022.

Drafted ninth overall by the Denver Nuggets in 1993, Rogers went on to play 866 NBA games, averaging 10.9 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. His career included stints with the Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, New Jersey Nets, New Orleans Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers.

“The NBA family is deeply saddened by the passing of Rodney Rogers,” the league said in a statement. “He will be remembered not only for his achievements on the court, but for the extraordinary resilience, courage and generosity he demonstrated throughout his life.”

Rogers is survived by his wife, Faye, and their three children: daughters Roddreka and Rydeiah, and son Rodney Rogers II.
