Concerns Raised Over GECOM’s Counting and Sorting Processes

  • News

Attorney at Law Nigel Hughes and Leader of the AFC has raised alarm over discrepancies in the counting and sorting processes at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). Following two recounts of the disciplined services envelopes containing votes, significant differences have emerged between the manual counts and the spreadsheets generated by GECOM’s IT department.

In Region 4, the manual count revealed two more envelopes/ballots than indicated in the GECOM spreadsheet. Conversely, Regions 5 and 10 reported that the manual count was one ballot/envelope less than what the spreadsheet showed.

In response to these inconsistencies, another recount is currently underway to investigate the reasons for the discrepancies between the manual counts and the GECOM-generated spreadsheets. As the situation develops, concerns continue to mount regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
