‘Security Forces Ready to Address Election Disruptions’ — Jagdeo

  • News

Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the PPP/C and Vice President of Guyana, assured supporters at a rally on August 24 that security forces are prepared to respond decisively to any attempts to disrupt the upcoming general and regional elections on September 1.

Speaking to thousands gathered at the Stewartville rally, Jagdeo condemned the “dangerous rhetoric” from rival political parties, specifically targeting the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) led by Aubrey Norton and the We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) party, led by U.S.-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed. He accused these leaders of attempting to lay the groundwork for claims of election rigging, anticipating a significant defeat at the polls.

“We’re heading to a huge, decisive, overwhelming victory for the PPP/C,” Jagdeo declared, emphasizing that such success is contingent on the unwavering support of their constituents. He noted the shift in tone from his opponents, indicating their awareness of impending loss.

Jagdeo cited statements from both Norton and Mohamed, highlighting Norton’s warning of potential unrest if he does not win and Mohamed’s claims of a fabricated poll showing him ahead. Jagdeo remarked, “He has adopted the language of the PNC, the old language of the PNC,” referring to historical tensions surrounding elections in Guyana.

In a firm commitment, Jagdeo assured the crowd that security forces are ready to maintain order. “I want to promise them that in case they try to create trouble when they are defeated by this massive victory of the PPP, they’re going to get into big trouble,” he warned.

“The security forces are ready to take on anyone who tries to disrupt the peaceful poll in these upcoming elections,” he concluded, reinforcing the government’s stance on ensuring a secure electoral process. As the election date approaches, the atmosphere remains charged as both supporters and critics prepare for what Jagdeo predicts will be a decisive victory for the PPP/C.
