Guyana Police Warn Against Spreading False Information

News

The Guyana Police Force has issued a stern reminder to the public regarding the serious legal implications of knowingly spreading false information intended to incite fear, panic, or public disorder.

According to the Criminal Law (Offences) Act (Cap. 8:01), individuals who incite wrongdoing or attempt to create unrest can face prosecution. The Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act (Cap. 8:02) also makes it an offence to aid or abet unlawful behavior.

Furthermore, the Cybercrime Act No. 16 of 2018 penalizes the use of computer systems or social media platforms to disseminate false information or incite hostility, including racial or ethnic tensions. Notably, these laws apply to actions taken both within Guyana and abroad, as long as the consequences affect the nation.

The police emphasized their commitment to taking decisive action against those who seek to mislead the public by spreading falsehoods. They urge citizens to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing, and act responsibly, especially during the upcoming election period, to ensure public safety and order.
