Police in Regional Division No. 3 are investigating an alleged armed robbery that occurred on Saturday at the residence of 40-year-old businessman Teyon McPhoy in Zeelugt North, East Bank Essequibo.

The incident unfolded around 1:40 PM when the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Deol Narayan from No. 70 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, reportedly visited McPhoy’s Superbet outlet earlier in the day. After placing several bets, all of which he lost, Narayan began accruing debts totaling approximately $140,000.

Shortly thereafter, he requested to use the washroom and was escorted to the back of the premises. A few minutes later, he allegedly confronted McPhoy with a handgun, demanding cash. During the encounter, Narayan managed to seize a quantity of $5,000 notes from a nearby wooden box.

A scuffle ensued, during which the handgun fell to the ground. Narayan attempted to flee the scene, entering a waiting motorcar. McPhoy, having picked up the fallen firearm, discharged approximately three rounds at the fleeing vehicle.

Narayan’s getaway attempt was thwarted when he crashed into a heap of sand a short distance away. McPhoy followed and opened the driver’s door, discovering the suspect bleeding from a head injury.

Police were called to the scene, and upon arrival, McPhoy surrendered the .32 pistol. Both the suspect and the victim were transported to De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where Narayan was treated before being transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital in serious condition.

Investigators processed the scene, recovering one suspected .32 spent shell, one warhead, and one live .32 round of ammunition. McPhoy has since been placed in custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
