Forward Guyana Movement Calls on GECOM to Clarify Role of Commonwealth Voters in 2025 Elections

News

The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) has formally requested information from the Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh, regarding the registration and participation of Commonwealth citizens in the upcoming 2025 General and Regional Elections.

In a letter from FGM Leader Amanza Walton-Desir, the organization seeks clarity on several key points, including:

The total number of registered Commonwealth citizens residing in Guyana.

A breakdown of these voters by country of origin, including India, Bangladesh, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Barbados.

The number of Commonwealth citizens who voted, categorized by their country of origin.

The statutory provisions governing their registration and voting rights.

Any internal guidelines or directives issued by GECOM related to the registration and voting processes for Commonwealth citizens.

Walton-Desir emphasized the importance of transparency for the integrity of the electoral system, stating, “Guyanese citizens must be assured that their democratic will is not frustrated or diluted by the participation of foreign nationals.”

FGM has requested a response from GECOM within fourteen days or an explanation if full compliance is not possible. Copies of the letter have also been sent to GECOM Commissioners and various international electoral observation missions, including the European Union, Commonwealth Secretariat, OAS, Carter Center, and CARICOM.
