Guyana Police Force Disappointed by Bail Decision in Corrosive Fluid Case

News

The Guyana Police Force has voiced its deep concern following a Georgetown Magistrate’s decision to grant bail to Keron Daniels, charged with throwing corrosive fluid with intent against Jilicia Leitch and Nirmala Sukraj.

In a statement, the Police Force detailed that Daniels first appeared in court on September 16, 2025, and was remanded to prison for one day. Upon his return on September 17 before Magistrate Faith McGusty, the Police Prosecutor opposed bail, citing a video-recorded confession from Daniels and the critical condition of one victim, who has reportedly lost sight in one eye and suffered severe facial disfigurement. Despite these serious considerations, bail was granted at $500,000.

The Police highlighted that Daniels and one victim had a history of a tumultuous relationship, with the woman pleading for justice from her hospital bed. The Force emphasized that violence against women is a significant issue in Guyana, and urged magistrates to consider such factors when determining bail.

“The matter is further compounded by the high likelihood of these types of offenses being repeated, especially when the alleged offender continues to have ready access to the victim,” the statement read.

Despite this setback, the Guyana Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to combatting violence against women, pledging to continue efforts to protect victims and hold offenders accountable.
