A 45-year-old man known as “Bread,” identified as Andrew Edwards, drowned around 6:30 AM on Monday while taking a bath in Lake Capoey, located in Essequibo Coast, Region Two.

According to police reports, Edwards, a laborer from Capoey Mission, had been drinking “high wine” with several villagers when he decided to go for a bath. Witnesses stated that he entered the lake approximately 200 feet from the shore. Moments later, he raised his hands in the air before suddenly disappearing beneath the water.

Realizing that Edwards was in distress, his cousin, Alex Richards, along with other villagers, rushed into the lake in an attempt to rescue him. Tragically, they were unable to reach him in time, and he drowned before help could arrive.

His body was later found submerged, and villagers managed to retrieve it and bring it to shore. They promptly alerted the police, who arrived on the scene.

Edwards’ body was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital for further examination before being sent to the mortuary. The community is mourning the loss of a man well-liked by those who knew him.
