Police Officers Highlight Challenges in Securing Prosecutions

News

Senior police officers across multiple regions are raising concerns about ongoing challenges in achieving successful prosecutions. Key issues include reluctant witnesses, victims opting for out-of-court settlements, and difficulties in obtaining vital evidence.

Assistant Commissioners Khali Pareshram (Region 4C), Dion Moore (Region Seven), and Kurleigh Simon (Region Ten) shared insights into these obstacles during a recent episode of ‘Police & You.’

Pareshram noted a troubling trend in his division, where many cases are dismissed due to witnesses failing to appear in court or choosing to settle serious matters, including robbery. This cycle allows offenders to return to the community and potentially reoffend.

He emphasized that while the police are responsible for investigations, successful prosecutions depend on solid evidence presented in court. To help address these issues, 70 security cameras have been installed in targeted areas, contributing to a decrease in crime.

Simon echoed these concerns, highlighting the reluctance of eyewitnesses to cooperate and difficulties in obtaining CCTV footage from businesses and residences. He stressed that the police are working to enhance their investigative capacity through training.

In Region Seven, Moore pointed out similar witness-related challenges but reported high conviction rates in recent years, thanks to mandatory video interviews, which provide clear evidence in court.

Despite the hurdles, the officers remain committed to improving prosecution rates and ensuring justice is served.
