Former police officer Franz Paul, 39, was granted bail on a narcotics charge but will remain in custody for firearm and ammunition charges.

Appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Paul was represented by Attorney Dominic Bess, who argued that the cannabis seized (2,267 grams) remains unconfirmed pending laboratory results. He contended that the substance should be considered “suspected” until tested.
The prosecution opposed bail, citing that both the cannabis and a .22 pistol with ammunition were found on Paul during his arrest on September 9 at Vlissengen Road.
Magistrate McGusty granted bail of $300,000 for the narcotics charge, citing delays in test results but denied bail for the firearm charges due to the prosecution’s claim that the weapon was found on his person. The case is adjourned to October 10.
Paul, who has pleaded not guilty, was first charged on September 13. His history includes a 2014 incident where he was accused of shooting a teenager during a game of Russian roulette, and in 2018, he faced charges for unlawful possession of a firearm and threats against his partner, both of which ended without conviction.
