
Daniel Persaud, an electrical engineer at Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), has been named the University of Guyana’s Valedictorian for 2025. He achieved a perfect Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 while earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, also receiving the prestigious President’s Medal for Best Graduating Student.
At 33 years old, Persaud will join approximately 3,700 graduands during the university’s convocation exercises scheduled from November 20 to December 6, 2025.
Upon learning of his Valedictorian status, he expressed immense gratitude and surprise, stating, “I am humbled by it.” He acknowledged the hard work and commitment necessary to achieve his goals, citing challenges in balancing academic requirements with home responsibilities, particularly in mathematics, a subject he initially struggled with.
Persaud emphasized the importance of perseverance, noting his journey to UG included initial rejection due to unmet admission requirements, which he overcame by gaining foundational training at the Government Technical Institute. His academic pursuit was supported by a scholarship from DDL, which along with family and mentors, played a crucial role in his success.
He encourages peers to seize opportunities at UG, emphasizing the need to serve their country and innovate within it. As he prepares for graduation, Persaud looks forward to continuing his career at DDL while pursuing a Master’s degree, attributing his achievements to his faith and support from loved ones.
