Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond has clarified the government’s recent directive regarding heavily tinted vehicles within the Guyana Police Force, addressing concerns that it targets subordinate ranks specifically.

“This is not meant to apply to senior ranks with tinted vehicles issued in the execution of their duties,” Walrond explained to the News Room on Thursday. “The directive focuses on subordinate ranks who have applied heavy tint to their private vehicles.”
The announcement, first made on Wednesday, mandated that police ranks remove illegal tints unless they possess a valid permit. Walrond stressed that the directive emphasizes accountability: those responsible for enforcing the law must also adhere to it.
“Let it be clearly understood that the law applies to everyone equally,” she asserted. “Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action, without exception.”
Following up on her announcement, Walrond outlined potential disciplinary measures for non-compliance, which can vary based on an officer’s record. She indicated that repeat offenders could face penalties ranging from demotion to dismissal from the Police Force. “Depending on the number of disciplinary actions already in your file, it can end up with them being demoted or even being released,” she said.
Police Commanders and Deputy Commissioners have circulated directives to enforce these regulations. When asked about the number of officers currently driving with illegal tints, Walrond stated that the responsibility to identify offending ranks lies with regional commanders.
“They are aware of which of their ranks have private vehicles, as most are parked within the police compound,” she noted.
Commanders have been instructed to identify officers with illegal tints and ensure their removal. Walrond reported that the compliance process has already commenced, stating, “I have been receiving videos from across the country of policemen and women removing their tints,” adding that this early compliance indicates the seriousness with which the directive is being taken.
