News

The Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, MSS, along with the Officers and Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), extends heartfelt congratulations to Second Lieutenant Travis Adams for his remarkable achievement in successfully completing the Brazilian Jungle Operations Course 25/3 category B, conducted by the Brazilian Army in Manaus, Brazil.

The course, led by the prestigious Centro de Instrução de Guerra na Selva (CIGS)—Brazil’s premier Jungle Warfare Instruction Centre—aims to provide specialized training for platoon and battalion commanders. It equips leaders with the skills and confidence necessary to guide troops in every aspect of jungle operations. This year’s cohort commenced with 48 officers, from Captain to Second Lieutenant, concluding with 35 graduates.

Second Lieutenant Adams distinguished himself as the only foreign student to complete this rigorous program, which demanded exceptional endurance, discipline, and adaptability. The training encompassed crucial elements such as jungle survival, tactical operations, advanced jungle craft, and physically demanding tasks conducted under intense environmental conditions. His exemplary performance not only signifies his personal resilience and professionalism but also highlights the high standards upheld by the Guyana Defence Force.

As a Special Forces Officer, Adams’ advanced training in jungle survival, reconnaissance, and small-unit tactical operations significantly enhances the GDF’s ability to operate effectively in Guyana’s dense interior terrain, which mirrors the challenging conditions of the Amazon. The specialized skills he acquired—including advanced land navigation, survival techniques in extreme conditions, and superior jungle craft—bolster the Battalion’s capacity for special operations, search and rescue missions, border security patrols, and rapid responses to emerging threats.

This achievement also underscores the strategic benefits to the Force’s overall operational readiness. Additionally, it reinforces the value of the longstanding partnership between the GDF and the Brazilian Army—relationships founded on mutual respect, shared expertise, and continuous professional development.

Through collaborative training opportunities like the Jungle Warfare Course, both militaries enhance interoperability, strengthen operational cooperation, and exchange advanced tactics and knowledge. The success of officers like Second Lieutenant Adams reaffirms the importance of these engagements, elevating individual competency while advancing the collective readiness and effectiveness of both nations’ defence forces.

Congratulations, 2Lt Travis Adams, on your outstanding achievement!
