Kesh Nandlall, Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc., has assured the public of a reliable electricity supply during the Christmas holidays, emphasizing that the company is well-prepared to meet seasonal demand.

In a recent engagement with reporters, Nandlall explained that GPL has been conducting extensive maintenance across its network in preparation for the holidays. While he acknowledged that these maintenance activities may have caused some inconvenience, he stressed their importance for ensuring a dependable power supply throughout the festive period.
“We have been doing a lot of maintenance work which requires some outages, and we apologize for that,” Nandlall stated. “These maintenance works are essential for providing reliable power and distribution for the holiday season.”
He highlighted that GPL’s highest annual demand typically occurs during September and October, with this year’s peak demand reaching 221 megawatts. “Right now, we have available in the system reliably about 250 megawatts. Christmas is not really our peak; the peak occurs in the hot season,” he clarified.
Looking ahead, Nandlall noted that the highest demand during the holiday period typically falls on Old Year’s Night. GPL projects that this year’s peak will range between 210 and 250 megawatts, which remains well within the company’s available generation capacity.
“So from a generation perspective, we are in a very comfortable position,” Nandlall concluded, reassuring residents that they can enjoy a reliable electricity supply as they celebrate the holidays.
