Elderly citizens and vulnerable residents at the Dharm Shala in Albouystown, Georgetown, were filled with joy as they celebrated Christmas with a special luncheon served by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the president has visited the country’s oldest humanitarian charity on Christmas Day.

Accompanied by Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn, President Ali made the annual visit a highlight of the holiday season. The Dharm Shala, meaning “Home of Benevolence for all Races,” continues to be a sanctuary for those in need.

During his visit, President Ali expressed the government’s commitment to supporting the organization through the Men on Mission (MoM) initiative, which he spearheads. He assured the management and staff of the charity, saying, “We can support some of the maintenance work that you have on the building here and in Berbice. We know how expensive it is. If we have to get the material to you [through] the Men on Mission programme, [we] will work with you on some of that maintenance programme.”

Describing the Dharm Shala as a beacon of hope and compassion, President Ali emphasized the importance of community during the holiday season. “A very important aspect of the Christmas story is a story of community; various communities coming together to acknowledge this symbol of hope, of togetherness, of love, of faith, as is demonstrated by this home,” he stated.

He pledged continued government support in the new year and commended the management for their unwavering dedication to the vulnerable community members.

As part of his commitment to charity, President Ali has made this annual luncheon a cherished tradition, reinforcing his vision of ‘One Guyana’. His administration has contributed over $3 million in monetary aid to the Dharm Shala, which has been serving the community for over a century.

The festive luncheon featured a variety of food and drinks, and musical entertainment, enhancing the merry atmosphere of the season. Additionally, President Ali distributed toys to children in the Albouystown area, spreading joy and goodwill during this special time of year.
