Nationwide Consultations Underway to Address Social Media, Gambling, and Substance Abuse

Ongoing nationwide consultations are being held to address the harmful effects of social media, gambling, and substance abuse, including vaping. Labour and Manpower Planning Minister Keoma Griffith announced on Saturday that these discussions will help shape new policies and budgetary measures starting in 2026.

In a video statement posted online, Griffith emphasized President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s commitment to establish a cross-ministerial team, comprising representatives from the ministries of education, information, and public service, to lead these critical consultations. “We will listen to you and shape policies that protect our families,” he assured.

According to Griffith, consultations have already begun across Guyana, with targeted measures to mitigate the social and economic damage caused by gambling expected to be included in the national budget for 2026. He also highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance education and prevention strategies against threats such as vaping and fentanyl, while reinforcing international partnerships to combat smuggling.

In a recent address, President Ali stated that his administration has received overwhelming feedback from various sectors of society, including parents, teachers, and community leaders, regarding the detrimental impact of social media on children and educational environments. “Only recently you’re seeing countries taking drastic steps for children and young people below the age of 16,” he noted, acknowledging that, while the challenge is global, its effects are particularly pronounced in Guyanese homes and schools.

The President reiterated his determination to act, directing relevant ministers to ensure that the national consultation process is thoughtful, inclusive, and aligned with the recommendations from the public, as policies are developed for the next five years.
