Ethnic Relations Commission Clarifies Position on Reshie Mangal’s Arrest

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has issued a clarification regarding the arrest and subsequent granting of bail to Reshie Mangal, following the widespread circulation of a video suggesting that the arrest was linked to an issue before the Commission.

In an official statement, the ERC addressed the claims made in the video, stating that it has no involvement in Mangal’s arrest or any matter currently engaging the attention of the Guyana Police Force. The Commission emphasized, “We wish to categorically state that it has not referred the current matter regarding Mr. Mangal to the police, nor has it referred any other matter involving him.”

The ERC specified that the matter involving Mangal under its purview is separate and distinct from the police investigation. Furthermore, they reiterated their public call for Mangal to contact the Commission regarding racially derogatory remarks allegedly made on his TikTok platform.

The ERC highlighted that its primary approach to addressing complaints is through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, such as mediation, arbitration, and reconciliation. They also mentioned that they reserve the right to refer cases to the police only when there is evidence of an offense under the Racial Hostility Act or the Cybercrime Act.

In conclusion, the ERC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting harmony, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence among all peoples in Guyana, urging the public to refrain from misinformation that could create unnecessary confusion concerning the Commission’s role and actions.
